devin mann milb: The Pride of Havana Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria, 2001-05-24 From the first amateur leagues of the 1860s to the exploits of Livan and Orlando El Duque Hernandez, here is the definitive history of baseball in Cuba. Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria expertly traces the arc of the game, intertwining its heroes and their stories with the politics, music, dance, and literature of the Cuban people. What emerges is more than a story of balls and strikes, but a richly detailed history of Cuba told from the unique cultural perch of the baseball diamond. Filling a void created by Cuba's rejection of bullfighting and Spanish hegemony, baseball quickly became a crucial stitch in the complex social fabric of the island. By the early 1940s Cuba had become major conduit in spreading the game throughout Latin America, and a proving ground for some of the greatest talent in all of baseball, where white major leaguers and Negro League players from the U.S. all competed on the same fields with the cream of Latin talent. Indeed, readers will be introduced to several black ballplayers of Afro-Cuban descent who played in the Major Leagues before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier once and for all. Often dramatic, and always culturally resonant, Gonzalez Echevarria's narrative expertly lays open the paradox of fierce Cuban independence from the U.S. with Cuba's love for our national pastime. It shows how Fidel Castro cannily associated himself with the sport for patriotic p.r.--and reveals that his supposed baseball talent is purely mythical. Based on extensive primary research and a wealth of interviews, the colorful, often dramatic anecdotes and stories in this distinguished book comprise the most comprehensive history of Cuban baseball yet published and ultimately adds a vital lost chapter to the history of baseball in the U.S.
devin mann milb: Bowie on Bowie Sean Egan, 2015-05-01 Over the Rainbow Selection 2016 David Bowie has been one of pop music's greatest interviewees since January 1972, when he famously risked career death by asserting to Melody Maker that he was gay. Although he wasn't yet a big star, it was a groundbreaking moment. And over the years, Bowie has failed to give an uninteresting interview. It might be said that he has habitually used the media for his own ends, but he has paradoxically also been searingly honest, declining to ever be coy about his ambitions, his private life, and even his occasional ennui. Bowie on Bowie presents some of the best interviews Bowie has granted in his near five-decade career. Each interview traces a new step in his unique journey, successively freezing him in time as young novelty hit-maker, hairy hippie, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, the Thin White Duke, plastic soul man, fragile Germanic exile, godfather of the New Romantics, eighties sellout, Tin Machinist, and, finally, permanently, artistically reborn beloved elder statesman of challenging popular music. In all of these iterations he is remarkably articulate. He is also preternaturally polite—almost every interviewer remarks upon his charm. The features in this book come from outlets both prestigious (MelodyMaker, Mojo, New Musical Express,Q, Rolling Stone) and less well-known (The Drummer, Guitar,Ikon, Mr. Showbiz). In all cases, Bowie enables the reader to approach the nerve center of his ferociously creative and prolific output.

devin mann milb: The Moralist Patricia O'Toole, 2019-04-16 Acclaimed author Patricia O’Toole’s “superb” (The New York Times) account of Woodrow Wilson, one of the most high-minded, consequential, and controversial US presidents. A “gripping” (USA TODAY) biography, The Moralist is “an essential contribution to presidential history” (Booklist, starred review). “In graceful prose and deep scholarship, Patricia O’Toole casts new light on the presidency of Woodrow Wilson” (Star Tribune, Minneapolis). The Moralist shows how Wilson was a progressive who enjoyed unprecedented success in leveling the economic playing field, but he was behind the times on racial equality and women’s suffrage. As a Southern boy during the Civil War, he knew the ravages of war, and as president he refused to lead the country into World War I until he was convinced that Germany posed a direct threat to the United States. Once committed, he was an admirable commander-in-chief, yet he also presided over the harshest suppression of political dissent in American history. After the war Wilson became the world’s most ardent champion of liberal internationalism—a democratic new world order committed to peace, collective security, and free trade. With Wilson’s leadership, the governments at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 founded the League of Nations, a federation of the world’s democracies. The creation of the League, Wilson’s last great triumph, was quickly followed by two crushing blows: a paralyzing stroke and the rejection of the treaty that would have allowed the United States to join the League. Ultimately, Wilson’s liberal internationalism was revived by Franklin D. Roosevelt and it has shaped American foreign relations—for better and worse—ever since. A cautionary tale about the perils of moral vanity and American overreach in foreign affairs, The Moralist “does full justice to Wilson’s complexities” (The Wall Street Journal).

devin mann milb: Elementary Classical Hydrodynamics B. H. Chirgwin, C. Plumpton, 2013-10-22 Elementary Classical Hydrodynamics deals with the fundamental principles of elementary classical hydrodynamics, with emphasis on the mechanics of inviscid fluids. Topics covered by this book include direct use of the equations of hydrodynamics, potential flows, two-dimensional fluid motion, waves in liquids, and compressible flows. Some general theorems such as Bernoulli's equation are also considered. This book is comprised of six chapters and begins by introducing the reader to the fundamental principles of fluid hydrodynamics, with emphasis on ways of studying the motion of a fluid. Basic concepts and quantities such as viscosity, density, and pressure, are considered, along with hydrostatics and the equation of motion. The discussion then turns to Bernoulli's equation, the motion of a small element of fluid, velocity potential, and the kinetic energy of a uniform incompressible fluid. The chapters that follow explore two-dimensional fluid motion; a uniform inviscid, incompressible liquid having a free surface and upon which the only body force acting is uniform gravity; and a compressible gas with undisturbed uniform pressure and density, paying particular attention to the propagation and reflection of sound waves. This book is intended as an elementary introduction to the mechanics of inviscid fluids for first and second year undergraduates.

devin mann milb: Cautiously Optimistic Peter Funt, 2013-04 How is the American spirit holding up in these difficult times? Peter Funt, syndicated columnist and host of TV's Candid Camera, looks beyond the headlines to find out. In six-dozen essays, Funt uses a light but penetrating touch to take the nation's temperature. I've always been fascinated by small slices of life, he writes. During my time in broadcast and print journalism, as well as in entertainment television, I've looked for the smaller items that, when taken together, create a bigger picture of who we are and where we're headed. Funt's columns appear regularly in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, and many of his op-eds formed the basis for these essays. Funt's canvas is very much like the real world we deal with every day. Sure, Americans are concerned about taxes, education and crime. But we also care about mobile apps that talk back to us, Paul McCartney's hairdo, and raccoons that destroy our lawns. On 'Candid Camera, ' Funt explains, we celebrated the American spirit, and in the last five years of traveling, interviewing and researching, I'm happy to report that the spirit remains strong. That said, my opinion pieces often focus on the negative. That's inherent in news and commentary; we don't dismiss all the good, but we search out those things that need to be fixed. In Cautiously Optimistic, Peter Funt finds the good, the bad and the occasionally hilarious. These essays are designed to make you think, but also to smile.

Starting with an explanation of the workings of hereditary, the author moves on to an in-depth discussion of the fundamental--and, as he points out, unchangeable--racial differences between Europeans and Africans in particular. Addressed in this volume are the standard topics of physical, psychological and intellectual differences. It then moves on to the important effects these differences have on society, providing an explanation for the ongoing and disproportionately high non-white crime rate, which, the author shows is rooted in an physical difference which creates different behavioral patterns. It then discusses the influence of genetics on behavior and how this principle is used in the breeding of animals, before showing how this is equally applicable to human genetics. George then discusses the origin of racial differences, and the dangers posed by racial integration, before concluding with an overview of the historical record of the Negro race and destroying all the classical liberal explanations for its non-achievements. Finally, the author proposes a just solution to the problem: physical geographic separation which will be in the interests of all races. Also contains an appendix detailing the lies and subversion spread by the Jewish anthropologist Franz Boas who started the environmental school of anthropology.   devin mann milb: Vietnam Mailbag Nancy E. Lynch, 2008-10-01 From the early 1960s through March 1973 hundreds of thousands of men and women served in Vietnam, in an undeclared and highly controversial war. During the peak years of that conflict, from May 1968 through December 1972, a young reporter, Nancy E. Lynch, relayed the hopes and fears, the joy and the tears, of hundreds of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines from Delaware through the Vietnam Mailbag column she wrote in the Wilmington Morning News. At the start, Nancy wrote one column a week. As the mailbag filled at an ever faster pace, she progressed to two columns a week, and then to three. No matter how much she wrote, there never seemed to be room to tell all the stories. But Nancy kept all those letters, and the pictures sent with many of them, neatly folded in their original envelopes. Now, nearly 40 years after she began writing her column, Nancy is reopening the Vietnam Mailbag to give a new generation a fresh look at the first-person accounts of troops in the combat zone. In countless ways, the Vietnam War transformed American society, and the experience of serving in this unpopular conflict would have an equally profound impact on the lives of the men and women who served there. In Vietnam Mailbag: Voices From the War, 1968-1972, Nancy tells the story of troops at war through the letters they wrote to her a generation ago and through a series of moving interviews with veterans who now share their views on how the Vietnam experience shaped their lives.
