We’ll cover everything from initial consultations to advanced therapies, providing you with the knowledge you need to make informed decisions about your care. This post aims to be your ultimate resource on Novant Health's dedicated lymphedema clinic and how it can support your journey to better health.

Understanding Lymphedema and its Impact:

Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling, typically in the arms or legs, caused by a buildup of lymph fluid. This fluid normally flows through the lymphatic system, but blockages or damage to the system can lead to its accumulation. The resulting swelling can be uncomfortable, painful, and potentially lead to serious complications if left untreated. Symptoms can range from mild swelling to significant limb enlargement, skin changes, and recurrent infections.

The Expertise at Novant Health Lymphedema Clinic:

Novant Health recognizes the significant impact of lymphedema and offers specialized care through its dedicated clinic. This clinic boasts a team of highly skilled healthcare professionals, including:

Certified Lymphedema Therapists (CLTs): These specialists possess in-depth knowledge of lymphedema and are trained to provide comprehensive assessments, develop personalized treatment plans, and administer specialized therapies.
Physicians: Collaborating closely with CLTs, physicians at Novant Health provide medical oversight and address any underlying medical conditions that may contribute to or worsen lymphedema.
Support Staff: The clinic also features a dedicated support staff to ensure a smooth and comfortable patient experience, assisting with scheduling, insurance coordination, and providing educational resources.

Comprehensive Treatment Approaches at the Clinic:

Novant Health's lymphedema clinic utilizes a multidisciplinary approach, employing a range of effective treatments tailored to individual patient needs. These include:

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle, specialized massage technique that helps move lymph fluid out of the affected area, reducing swelling and improving lymphatic circulation. CLTs at Novant Health are expertly trained in this technique.
Compression Therapy: The use of bandages, sleeves, or garments that apply consistent pressure to the affected limb, supporting lymphatic drainage and preventing fluid accumulation. The clinic assists in fitting and selecting appropriate compression options.
Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT): CDT is the gold standard of lymphedema treatment, combining MLD, compression therapy, skin care, and exercise to optimize lymphatic flow and manage swelling. Novant Health's clinic offers comprehensive CDT programs.
Exercise Therapy: Specific exercises are prescribed to improve lymphatic circulation and range of motion, promoting overall physical function and reducing stiffness.
Skin Care Education: Proper skin care is crucial in lymphedema management to prevent infections. The clinic provides education on maintaining skin hygiene and recognizing signs of infection.
Education and Self-Management: The clinic empowers patients with the knowledge and skills necessary for ongoing self-management, including techniques for self-MLD, compression garment care, and recognizing warning signs.

Beyond Treatment: Support and Resources at Novant Health:

The Novant Health lymphedema clinic goes beyond providing treatment. They offer crucial support and resources to help patients live well with their condition. These include:

Support Groups: Connecting with others facing similar challenges can be incredibly beneficial. The clinic may facilitate or connect patients with support groups.
Educational Materials: Access to brochures, online resources, and workshops helps patients gain a deeper understanding of lymphedema and its management.
Ongoing Monitoring: Regular follow-up appointments ensure continued progress and allow for adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.

How to Access Care at Novant Health Lymphedema Clinic:

Accessing care at Novant Health's lymphedema clinic typically involves:

Concurrently, however, there has been an increase in revision surgery. Many orthopedic surgeons agree that durability of prostheses is an eternal problem. In particular, periprosthetic osteolysis recently has been identified as one of the serious problems affecting prosthetic dura bility. To improve durability, osteolysis and many other problems must be investi gated and solved both experimentally and clinically with respect to such aspects as prosthetic material, design, and biological and biomechanical behavior. This book comprises 37 papers that were presented by orthopedic surgeons and biomedical engineers at the 28th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Replace ment Arthroplasty, held in March 1998 in Kanazawa, Japan. The volume is thus a compilation of the latest knowledge about the pathogenesis and reduction of osteolysis and wear, newly developed total hip prostheses, and other current topics of total knee arthroplasty. We earnestly hope that this book will be of benefit to clinicians and researchers, and that it will contribute to the creation of more durable total joint prostheses in the future.
