The issue of chronic and neuropathic pain is very prevalent, yet only a fraction of the symptoms and root causes, as well as potential treatment plans, are properly understood. Additionally, less than half of cases are accurately identified and properly treated. The existing drugs, although classified as very strong and powerful, cannot provide lasting relief to chronic and neuropathic pain. Thus, with all the unique features of this condition, this book presents a systematic way of diagnosing and approaching this condition so every practitioner can appropriately treat their patients. In addition to introducing key concepts, like classification of chronic pain and the challenges patients and practitioners face when dealing with and treating chronic and neuropathic pain, this book also covers different syndromes that can lead to neuropathic pains. It discusses how to monitor progress by using outcome measures, the presence of chronic and neuropathic pain in children and young adults, and the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain as it relates to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Interestingly, the latter is not presently addressed except with the usual pain drugs for general pain—this book aims to revolutionize the approach to chronic and neuropathic pain by exploring it separately from the clinical approach to general pain. Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, 2006 The rules and regulations stipulated by the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control apply to all tobacco products. This will therefore include tobacco consumed through use of the water pipe, or shisha, a traditional form of smoking common to the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. The regulation of tobacco products includes health warnings, information about contents and emissions, as well as packaging and labeling. This publication comprises a series of studies conducted by the Egyptian Smoking Prevention Research Institute (ESPRI). For decades use of the water pipe, or shisha, was considered to be less harmful than cigarette consumption; worse, in the eyes of many users it is not even considered to be a form of tobacco smoking. Traditionally the water pipe has been regarded as less harmful and less addictive than cigarettes. These studies show the reality behind this false premise. The water pipe is as harmful and as addictive as cigarettes. The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean hopes, through the publication of these studies, to convey the message to decision-makers, health professionals and the public in the Region that use of the water pipe is indeed harmful. It is just another of the many disguised forms of tobacco consumption and not a safe alternative to cigarettes. |

We do know that 180-200 million people are infected and that the infection is increasing but we have not as yet been able to answer the question: Are they suffering from a disease. Study of vital statistics or hospital records, mass biochemical or immunological tests and community surveys have not yet provided the full answer. Gradually and perhaps begrudgingly, we have come to realize that we must study the ma- initially by means of well controlled clinical observations to obtain evidence for the altered physiology, if any, due to bilharzial infection; secondly and equally important through pathological studies on individual patients to determine the structural changes, if any, as a result of infection with this parasite; and by post mortem studies. Experimental studies of bilharzial infection in animals, valuable as they may be for the elucidation of the pathogenesis of the lesions in the laboratory animal and in man cannot serve as a substitute for the precise information on the nature of the possible lesions induced by bilharziasis in man. Basically, the significance of any clinical observation can 'be evaluated only through reliable pathological confirmation. |
